Visage for Mac

You look.
Your Mac opens.

Face unlock that lives in the notch. Recognition and liveness checks run entirely on your Mac.

Free · macOS 15 or later · Apple Silicon and Intel

Locked

The real Visage animation, running in your browser. No camera involved.

How it works

A look. A check.
You’re in.

01

It wakes with your Mac

When your Mac locks, wakes, or you press space on the lock screen, Visage opens in the notch and starts looking.

02

It checks it’s really you

Each frame becomes a 512-number face embedding and is matched against your enrolled faces, while liveness checks look for photos and screens.

03

It types your password

On a match, Visage enters your Mac password — stored encrypted behind Touch ID — and your Mac opens.

First-time setup

Nine directions.
About a minute.

The first time, Visage learns your face right in the notch. Follow the light across your screen, and the ring fills in as each angle is captured.

An illustration of Visage’s guided enrollment. Your camera stays off.

Styles

Big and clear,
or barely there.

Choose the animation in Settings, or turn it off. Hover a card to watch it again.

Original

The full scan, with its success and failure animation, right under the camera.

Minimal

A slim bar around the notch: the lock on one side, the scan on the other.

No notch? No problem.

Macs without a notch get a floating pill that slides down into the same spot.

Features

Small details.
All of them yours.

Your choice of trigger

Scan on wake, on lock, or when you press space at the lock screen — any combination.

More than one face

Enroll other people, or yourself with glasses or in new lighting. Switch any off without deleting.

Liveness checks

Light screens out glare and phone screens. Heavy also wants a blink or a small head movement.

Camera per display

Use a different camera for the built-in display and an external monitor.

Sessions that re-lock

Access to your stored password locks itself again after the idle period you choose.

Hover to retry

Missed you? Move the pointer over the notch to scan again, with a gentle trackpad tap.

Settings

Everything in one
familiar window.

Triggers, enrolled faces, recognition and liveness — in a window that feels like it came with your Mac.

Visage Settings

Interactive preview. Nothing here touches your Mac, camera or password.

Privacy

Recognizes you.
Keeps it to itself.

On-device

Detection, recognition and liveness run locally with Vision and Core ML.

No photos

Camera frames stay in memory. Only 512-number face embeddings are kept.

Encrypted

Face data and your password are sealed with AES-GCM, using a Keychain key that needs Touch ID or your password.

No network

No account, no cloud, no analytics. Visage makes no network requests.

Not Face ID. A regular Mac camera can’t see depth, so a photo or video of you may unlock your Mac. Liveness checks make that harder, not impossible. Touch ID and your password always keep working.

FAQ

Good to know.

Is Visage free?

Yes. No account, subscription or in-app purchases.

Which Macs does it work with?

Any Mac on macOS 15 or later with a camera, Apple Silicon or Intel. MacBooks with a notch get the notch animation; other Macs get the pill.

Is this the same as Face ID?

No. Visage uses a regular camera without depth sensing, so it is a convenience, not a security upgrade. Touch ID and your password keep working.

How does it unlock my Mac?

macOS has no way for an app to approve a login, so Visage types your stored password on the lock screen after your face matches and the liveness checks pass. That’s why it needs Accessibility access.

Is the camera always on?

No. It turns on for setup, the preview in Settings, and a short scan after your Mac locks, wakes or you press space — for the detection time you choose, 3 to 10 seconds. The camera light always shows.

Can more than one person use it?

Yes. Enroll several identities and switch any of them off without deleting.
